TREES & SHELTER: Very early humans like australopithecus didn't shelter in caves because of the dangerous animals. Sometimes they made fire to scare off the animals in the caves. Instead they adapted to the trees to climb into or the rocks and cliffs to shelter under.
CAVES: The Neanderthals lived in caves and had fires where they cooked their meals. Unlike the australopithecus, the Neanderthals were good hunters, so they killed all the animals in the caves.
HUTS: The Cro-Magnon Man had two homes, one in a permanent location and one they brought with them. In the summer months the Cro-Magnon lived in "easy to set up" tents or tee-pees. In the winter months they lived in more permanent location and sturdier huts. These huts would be spacious for a full family.
